Arts non-profits - how are your jobs faring?

Are we losing cultural jobs in Iowa? It's a mixed picture.

Nationally, it's clear things are tough. Latest information is from Johns Hopkins University Center for Civil Society Studies, in its Listening Post project, Recession Pressures on Nonprofit Jobs, covering October 2009-March 2010 -- pretty up-to-date information. Their study included museums, theaters, and orchestras, among other nonprofits. Here's a startling find highlighted in the press release about the research:

"Arts and culture organizations have been particularly hard hit with 56 percent of the theaters and 53 percent of museums reporting inadequate staff to maintain their existing activities."

Still, according to the 2010 Americans for the Arts annual Creative Industries report, Iowa employs about 3% more people in arts-related businesses in 2010 than in 2009. Apples to oranges? Maybe.

What's your take?
